Press Release: Ava Community Energy Kicks Off the New Year by Issuing $22MM in Bill Credits to its Customers

Jan 16, 2025

The millions in savings include an additional one-time $100 bill credit for income-qualifying customers, further signaling the provider’s commitment to broadening clean energy access

Oakland, Calif. (January 16, 2025) – Ava Community Energy (Ava), today announced that they have begun issuing $22 million in credits back to its customers through the agency’s bill credits. One of the nation’s top green power providers, Ava’s reinvestment in its ratepayers reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to reliable and affordable energy across Alameda and San Joaquin Counties.

Beginning January 8, all households served by Ava that participate in income-qualifying rates under the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) or Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) programs began to receive a one-time, $100, credit on their latest utility bill.

Additionally, all Ava residential customers began receiving an additional $8.82 credit, totaling $4.1 million. An additional $7 million in credits are being issued to non-residential customers. With 115,000 qualifying CARE and FERA households, plus additional credits for all residential and commercial customers, Ava’s bill credits will return $22 million to its customers this New Year.

“As a not-for-profit public agency, Ava is proud to return excess revenue back into the hands of our customers,” said Howard Chang, CEO of Ava Community Energy. “Our credits and savings program enables us to continue bringing clean, reliable and affordable energy to the communities we serve.”

Ava’s bill credits and savings program is just one part of the company’s mission to make communities within its service territory’s transition to energy efficiency more cost-effective. All Ava participants can also take advantage of Ava Bright Choice, which offers a five percent discount compared to PG&E’s energy rates. With these credits, Ava has returned a combined $140 million in savings to its customers.
