Charge Plugs: What’s the Difference?

NACS
The North American Charging Standard (NACS), previously known as the Tesla plug, has become the standard in North America, with major automakers including Ford, GM, Rivian, and others adopting it for new vehicles. The plug is lightweight and compact, and the charge port itself is relatively tiny.

CCS
Combined Charging System (CCS) the second most common fast-charging standard you’ll find in cars on the market today as well as at public charging stations.

CHAdeMO
Charge de Move (CHAdeMO) is found primarily on Nissan Leafs. CHAdeMO is generally doesn’t charge as fast as the other two standards, although Nissan Leafs are not high-range vehicles, so their smaller battery fills quickly.
FAQs
Why is Ava providing public EV fast charging?
Ava is building a network of EV fast chargers because we want more people to drive electric vehicles. A large percentage of greenhouse gas emissions in our service territory come from transportation. Removing gasoline-powered vehicles from the road is crucial to lowering emissions, improving local air quality, and combating climate change.
We know from research that lack of access to fast, reliable charging is a key barrier to EV adoption. This is especially true for those who live in multi-family or other housing where home charging isn’t an option.
Ava Charge stations are located in areas with lots of multi-family housing and near places where people work and gather so drivers can quickly charge up and get back to their day.
What types of vehicles can charge at Ava Charge?
Each Ava Charge site comes equipped with charging ports to serve the diversity of EVs on the road today and in the future. NACS (Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq 5 MY25, Kia EV6 MY25, others with adapters) and CCS (Kia Niro, Volkswagen ID.4, Chevy Bolt, and nearly all other existing EVs) are available at all Ava Charge sites, while CHAdeMO (Nissan Leaf) is available at Oakland City Center West Garage only.
See our map for the specific charging ports available at each site.
How long does it take to charge my EV?
EV charging time is highly variable, depending on your car’s starting State of Charge (SOC) percentage, your target ending SOC percentage, the voltage of your EV’s battery, and the charging gear installed at a site.
At Ava Charge sites, we are installing fast charging hardware (currently offering up to 300+kW) to ensure that piece of the equation sets all drivers up for the fastest charge possible for their EV.
How much does it cost to charge my EV with Ava Charge?
Access the PlugShare or EV Connect apps to see current prices. There is no session initiation fee.
Parking fees: Any applicable parking fees are waived while your EV is charging. See details about each site using the interactive map above.
How do I pay for my charging session?
You can pay with credit card, debit card, or mobile wallet (such as Apple Pay or Google Pay) using the card reader available on each charger, or via the EV Connect app, which you can download from the App Store. You don’t need to create an account if you prefer not to, though you will need to enter payment information into the app before charging.
