Ava SmartHome Battery

A home battery saves you money and gives you energy independence. SmartHome Battery helps you pay for it.

What is SmartHome Battery?

Whether you’re installing a new solar and battery system, adding a home battery to your existing solar system, or already own a solar and battery system, SmartHome Battery maximizes your investment with installation rebates and participation payments. The program connects your battery to Ava Community Energy’s virtual power plant (VPP) and taps into it during times when the grid is strained, which reduces emissions and helps keep electricity rates stable for the whole community.

How It Works

SmartHome Battery is an incentive program for customers to help keep rates affordable for everyone, improve household resilience, and build a stronger local grid – all powered by clean energy.

Installation Rebate

The installation rebate helps customers lower the initial cost to install a new solar and battery system or add a home battery to an existing solar system. The rebate amount depends on a customer’s income, battery size, and the capacity selected to share with Ava’s virtual power plant.

Participation Payments

Participation in SmartHome Battery connects your home battery system to Ava’s virtual power plant. Participation payments are delivered to customers every three months over the course of five years. The amount of money earned is calculated based on the type of battery and amount of battery capacity chosen to share during the enrollment process. Full details about payment calculation and VPP participation are available in the program participation agreement.

Program Benefits

  • Lower upfront costs: Reduce the cost to own a home solar and battery system or add a battery to an existing solar system.
  • Ongoing participation payments: Customers earn participation payments based on the amount of energy shared from the customer’s battery to Ava’s virtual power plant.
  • Bill savings: Outside of grid events, customers can use their battery to reduce their electricity bill charges.
  • Stronger grid: When the grid is strained, home batteries help meet local demand. As more batteries join Ava’s virtual power plant, we can reduce grid congestion and energy procurement costs for the whole community.
  • Cleaner energy: By storing energy in a battery and sharing it with the virtual power plant during events, residents contribute to a community-wide effort to reduce the amount of power generated by natural gas power plants and replace it with clean, local resources.
  • Home energy resilience: For certain system configurations, energy stored in the battery keeps the household’s electricity running during power outages.
